RT6 Exhibition – it was good to see you in Bali!
Tags: RSPO roundtable meeting update
A sincere thanks to all of you who made time to visit the GreenPalm exhibition stand last week at the RSPO’s 6th Roundtable Meeting (RT6) on Sustainable Palm Oil, in Bali. It was good to see so many familiar faces and to meet lots of new people too.
Interest and enquiry levels were excellent, both from palm oil producers and end users. Better still, we gained a very real sense that GreenPalm is becoming widely accepted by RSPO members as a viable means of supporting the production of sustainable palm oil.
This is excellent news and we look forward to welcoming new members to the GreenPalm programme in the coming weeks, together with further GreenPalm certificate trading.
GreenPalm off-market trading – update
A great deal of interest was expressed at RT6 in GreenPalm off-market trading. In particular off-market trading was discussed as a means of enabling palm oil processors to take part in the GreenPalm programme.
The off-market trading facility was originally developed to enable users to buy GreenPalm certificates directly from specific producers who can supply additional environmental data, or who are perhaps in specific locations. We hoped too that it would appeal to palm oil or palm kernel oil users/retailers who wish to support an individual producer.
How GreenPalm off-market trading works…
The GreenPalm off-market service is easy to use. You simply need to join the GreenPalm programme by visiting http://www.greenpalm.org and complete the membership forms.
As a buyer you will need to negotiate directly with an RSPO certified producer. You must then agree a volume of certificates for a particular calendar year at a specified price. Then you have to contact GreenPalm via electronic mail, copying your counterparty, specifying the agreed year, volume and price. GreenPalm will then verify the details with the counterparty.
Once confirmation is received we will enter the details into the GreenPalm platform. The system will then follow the standard GreenPalm rules. As soon as the certificates have been fully paid for you will be able to redeem them and claim to have supported the production of RSPO certified sustainable palm oil or palm kernel oil.

GreenPalm uniquely capable of supporting small holders
During the course of RT6 the president of the RSPO, Jan Kees Viz, claimed the GreenPalm programme to be an excellent means of encouraging palm oil small holders to adopt sustainable practices. We believe this is an excellent point, well made. And since 40% of palm oil is produced by small holders in both Indonesia and Malaysia, this represents an important opportunity for the GreenPalm programme to make a real difference.
An oil extraction rate can be applied to the fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) produced by smallholders, and converted into a CPO volume. One tonne of certified palm oil (CPO) will equal one GreenPalm certificate. This will allow smallholders who have been found to be producing to the RSPO’s tough sustainability standards, to earn more for their crop, by participating in the GreenPalm programme.
So get involved with GreenPalm. For every GreenPalm certificate traded $1 is donated to the RSPO. Greater funds will enable the RSPO to help more producers, in particular the smallholders, make the switch to sustainable palm oil production. Your support could therefore make a real difference.
Thanks so much once again for your interest. If I can provide any further information on any of the points raised above or on the GreenPalm programme in general, do not hesitate to get in touch.
